Triple whammy...

Just after BITLIST 3-12 went to the presses a note from John Voigt arrived
in my reader announcing the availability of the file server TCSSERVE@TCSVM.
A marvelous event, a new file server... something that doesn't happen often
enough. So I smiled and prepared to add it to this weeks 'list.

Tuesday I strolled over to my electronic mailbox. What did I find but a
note from Henry Nussbacher! He passed onto me the announcement of new info
servers in Arpanet. Stupendous... two new file servers in the same week!
Who could ask for anything more?

So... Wednsday I checked my mail, not expecting to find much. Of course
Harri Salminen sent me the news about the new file server at Helsinki Univer-
sity, SILMARIL@FINHUTC. Absolutely Tremendous...! Three file server
announcements in the same week!

So grab your hat and hold your heart. Here comes the marvelous, stupendous,
absolutely tremendous news, as well as a few other tidbits.

Hi Chris:
Just a note to let you know that the file server at Tulane is now fully
functional. Currently we have the IBM7171 NOTEBOOK for the LISTSERV list
that we run archived, as well as the REXXLIST NOTEBOOK, special tables of
interest only to 7171 and Series/1 protocol converter users, and all the
issues of NutWorks that I had. The current copy of BITLIST is also
available with the filename BITLIST LETTER.

If you need any additional information, please drop me a note.

From: "Charlotte D. Mooers"
Subject: Announcing the CSNET Info Server

A new automated mail-based Info Server began service at the CIC on
csnet-sh.arpa, in January 1986. This is the official announcement.
The Info Server receives mail requests and automatically sends the
requested documents by return mail.

The request format is patterned on that of the MOSIS system, which is
familiar to many CSNET users. A sample message might be:

        From: user@member-site
        To: info@csnet-sh.arpa
        Subject: anything (or nothing)

        REQUEST: INFO
          TOPIC: HELP
          TOPIC: SITES-1
        REQUEST: RFC
          TOPIC: RFC822
        REQUEST: END

The Info Server is forgiving about upper and lower case letters and
spacing in the request message. When the Info Server receives this
request, it immediately returns one message for each topic, plus a
"receipt" message. In this case, the topic messages would contain a
HELP document, including instructions and a concise list of INFO
topics, a list of CSNET sites (sites-1), and a copy of the report
"Standard for the Format of ARPA Internet Text Messages" (RFC822).

There are now three classes of request, each with its own HELP topic.
The HELP documents list the order code, title and length of each topic
document. The topics intially available in "REQUEST: INFO" are
updated versions of the documents previously distributed as CSNET Info
Messages. "REQUEST: RFC" contains selected RFC ("Request for
Comments") documents published by the DDN Network Control Center
(NIC). "REQUEST: SOURCES" contains source code files of interest to
CSNET users, such as Sendmail configuration files.

The Info Server can be requested to split documents longer than an
arbitrary limit. If a host computer has a limit on the length of
messages it will accept, the user can include a line such as
"LINE-LIMIT: 1000" or "BYTE-LIMIT: 25K". You can redirect the
documents to some other mailbox, by including a standard Reply-to:
field in the header of the message (NOT as part of the request in the
body of the message). A request message using these features might
be:

        From: user@member-site
        To: info@csnet-sh.arpa
        Subject: anything (or nothing)
        Reply-to: other-user@other-site

    request: sources
      byte-limit: 15K
      topic: help
      topic: gatech
    request: end

If the Info Server can't decipher a request, it automatically sends a
short HELP message with appropriate instructions. If you want your
message to be seen by a human being, we prefer that you send to
cic@csnet-sh.arpa, but we also conform to MOSIS grammar; you can get
the same effect by including a line of the form REQUEST: ATTENTION
in your request message to info@csnet-sh.arpa.

The CSNET Info Server was developed by the CIC staff, using utilities
in MMDF II.

To: BITLIB at YALEVMX

Dear Chris:

I have designed a network file- and infoserver which seems to run
properly now. It's name is SILMARIL at FINHUTC and it has now all
kinds of files from other servers, magazines and mailing lists from BITNET
and ARPANET, locally made utilities and subroutines, all kinds of information
of different networks and games. It's file collection is bit messy now
but I'll be cleaned soon. It can also give information about our system
mainly useful for local use from our other machines.
If you'd put it on bitlist I'll see how well it takes the load....
I also include the Silmaril Info file and Silmaril Filelist for
your reference.

   Yours sincerely Harri Salminen

Silmaril is a general purporose network server for distributing
programs, magazines and other files, getting information of FINHUTC
and other interesting uses. Silmaril is located at IBM 4341-12
CAE machine at the Helsinki University of Technology Computing Centre
in Espoo, Finland 4 nodes east from BITNIC. We are using CATIA, CADAM,
CBDS2, CAEDS, GDQF, GDDM etc and we'd like to exchange experiences with
other IBM CAE administrators and systems programmers.
Files are sent in netdata, disk dump, print or punch formats as
defined in your node's entry in the nodes file, but there's still
a punch option just in case...
Contributions of interesting files are accepted to our growing
collection. Files in the Restrict Filelist are restricted to local
distribution in the get command. Many of the files are also available
from other servers mentioned in bitlist so please check them
before transferring megabytes to the other end of the network...
LOCAL USERS NOTE: These files are on public disks directly
accessible through USE EARN, MAGAZINE, UFO, TEKOLA and PELIT
commands.

Silmaril commands:

HELP
Gives you a shorthand syntax of commands via direct messages

DIR (
Automatically makes an uptodate commented list of available files
and sends it to you in a suitable format file. Punch is optional.

GET (
Sends a explicitly named file to you in a suitable format.
No *'s are allowed. Punch is optional. Files in restrict filelist
are restricted to local distribution, which is informed.

WHO (
Gives a list of users in the system, system load, uptime etc.
Option all gives also names of system virtual machines.
If substring is given who displays the mathing id's and names.
     Departmental codes:
     A - Department of Architecture
KO - Department of Mechanical Engineering
LK - Computing Centre alias HUTCC alias TeKoLa
R - Department of Civil Engineering
S - Department of Electrical Engineering
Y - Department of General Sciences, CS, Math., Fys. etc.

INFO
Graf tells the status of 3250 and 5080 graphics workstations.
PRinter tells the status of the real printer and
the status of the system printer queue.
PLotter lists the system plotter queue.
Tape tells the status of the tape station(s).
All is all of the above combined.
     Help gives this text.

FEEDBACK message
This leaves a message to silmaril's feedback file for
the administrator. Use it for reporting problems, expressing
your opinions of silmaril, suggestions etc.

The other news...

RELAY@CZHRZU1A is now an active Relay conference machine. Thanks to
Christain Schaeke for the news.

Bob Baker tells me that back issues of CLUB magazine can now be obtained
by sending him a note at his userid, BBAKER@MAINE.

Many thanks to John Voigt, Henry Nussbacher and Harri Salminen for the
information they sent me.
